A new report highlights a novel way for doctors to replace thinning hairlines: transplanting leg hair.

The advanced FUE approach which is able to harvest and transplant grafts as small as a single hair follicle now allows for the transplantation of body hair or "BHT."  New surgical tools like NeoGraft FUE allows surgeons greater accuracy and efficiency when harvesting these follicles without using a scalpel or stitches.

Body Hair Transplantation (BHT) remains controversial to some degree because the cycling and growth rate of non-scalp follicles may be much slower than those on the head. However Dr. Umar seems to have had some good success with the leg hair in these particular cases. Personally, when performing BHT for baldness, I use beard hair--which seems to grow quite robustly on the scalp--in cases when scalp donor follicles are in short supply.

In fact, beard hair grows so robustly I would not suggest it to be used in the hairline... So perhaps we can use a combination of body hair from different areas like the arms/legs (as Dr. Umar has suggested) as well as the beard or chest to achieve the desired results for some of these special cases. --Dr. Alan Bauman

 

NOTE: Most people who have not had some kind of previous hair transplantation or old-style donor scars will have plenty of scalp hair to transplant to the thinning or balding areas, so Body Hair Transplants would typically be reserved for rare cases.  Finishing off a crown/vertex area or filling in some old scars are some examples of how I would use Body Hair Transplantation for my hair loss patients.

Is hair transplantation the only hairline restoration option?

What are your hairline restoration options?

When it comes to restoring your own living and growing hairline, unfortunately, if you are balding in these areas, options are limited.  Because of the severe depletion of density that has caused your hairline to appear receded, non-invasive  FDA-approved medical treatments like topicals (minoxidil/Rogaine/Formula82M, etc.) and treatments such as laser therapy are unlikely to have a major restorative impact.  In addition, oral prescription FDA-approved hair regrowth medication like Propecia/finasteride and other anti-DHT treatments might help protect the hairline from receding further, but a true restoration is also unlikely. 

For permanent restoration of a living and growing hairline, hair transplantation is the most successful option.  Today, hair transplants performed with NeoGraft FUE approach use a microsurgical technique to move permanent hair follicles from the back of the scalp and implant them into the thinning, balding or receding areas. 

Highly-trained NeoGraft FUE hair transplant surgeons and their teams are able to harvest literally thousands of hair follicles and follicular-units individually, leaving no telltale linear scar in the ‘donor area’ located in the back of the scalp.  NeoGraft FUE is a new, minimally-invasive approach to hair follicle harvesting, eliminating the old-style “strip harvest” method.  Recovery is faster, more comfortable and with a shorter duration of activity restriction… you can literally be back in the gym in three days because there are no staples or sutures/stitches to injure.

A meticulous, artistic approach is critical in the hairline or ‘recipient area’ in order to assure that each follicle’s angle, orientation and position will deliver a 100% natural and undetectable result when grown in.  Careful planning and execution of the hairline design is important as well as the advanced surgical instruments, lighting and magnification and highly trained staff to help complete the procedure.

Hair Transplant Technologies: What Does the Chairman of the ASHRS Have to Say? - MarketWatch

PORT ORANGE, Fla., Jan. 31, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- There are many new technologies available for hair transplant surgeons today. But with so many technologies available and so many hair transplant surgeons claiming they have the best technology, how can one know which one is the best? The new chairman of the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ASHRS), Dr. Marco Barusco, gives his opinion on some of the latest and upcoming technological advances in this field.

HypoThermosol(TM)Perhaps some of the most important technological advances are the ones dealing with tissue preservation. According to Dr. Barusco, once the donor hair is taken from the back of the head the clock starts ticking. "The quicker we re-attach the hair to the scalp the better the chance it will survive", Dr. Barusco said. Traditionally, surgeons have used regular saline solution to preserve the tissue, but HypoThermosol(TM) has been showing to have the best composition. It is easy to work with and preliminary observations suggest that it improves hair survival and overall results.

ACell(TM)ACell(TM) is used for wound healing and hair growth. It is rich in growth factors and collagen. This technology significantly benefits the patient but given its high cost very few surgeons use this material. When a doctor uses ACell(TM) the donor area of the scalp heals better, leaving a smaller and thinner scar, and the transplants grow better.

I agree with Dr. Barusco's comments here... there are a lot of new and exciting breakthroughs in the medical specialty of hair loss, hair restoration and hair transplants. Our experience with advanced graft-storage solutions like Hypothermosol or blood-derived Autologel PRP (platelet rich plasma) have been very encouraging. We currently use Autologel PRP as an adjunctive wound-healing treatment with every FUE NeoGraft hair transplant and are looking forward to being part of the new research to support its use. ACell and other ECM's for wound-healing also have their place, but we are NOT seeing the 'hair cloning' or hair regeneration in the donor area which was originally reported by some hair transplant surgeons who used ACell.
I was a little surprised that Dr. Barusco did not mention the worldwide trend toward FUE follicular-unit extraction--a procedure which has seen a dramatic exponential increase in volume within the past five years.

Are scientists making progress on Hair Cloning? RepliCel Provides Quarterly Trial Update

To date, 17 of 19 subjects have had their six-month follow-up visit, during which time subjects had their overall health evaluated. This included subjective and objective assessment of verum and placebo injected sites and digital images were taken of the scalp and injection areas.  The digital images will be used to assess any treatment response and any post-injection changes in scalp health compared to baseline and between the two treatment areas.  The remaining two patients are scheduled to complete their follow-up visits before the end of March.  Four patients will complete 12-month follow-up visits in that same time frame.

It seems like scientists have been talking about hair multiplication (aka "hair cloning") for decades. Hair loss patients and hair doctors are wondering, are they making any progress? RepliCel, located in Vancouver, Canada is one of the few companies performing this state of the art research and there are 19 participants in this part of the hair cloning trial. No detailed information has been released by Replicel regarding their observations at the treatment areas so far.

At Bauman Medical Group, we have many patients who might be good candidates for hair multiplication/hair cloning procedures if the technology turns out to be viable! For now, however, we will surely have to stay tuned! --Dr. Alan Bauman

I used to think that fluttering your eyelashes was a flirtation that went out with corsets and smelling salts.

It looks like I’m wrong. The industry that has developed around lengthening and coloring women’s eyelashes has dug in, and the products it is offering are apparently going to stay on the menu at area beauty salons and dermatology offices.

To heck, it seems, with buying mascara and applying it daily. Formulations such as Latisse, which was developed from a pharmaceutical compound to regulate pressure in the eye but found to also lengthen eyelashes, have had a huge effect in the beauty market.
