Eyelash Transplant/Rachel on Sonoran Living Live

Rachel (our trichotillomania/eyelash and eyebrow transplant patient) drove down from California to be on Sonoran Living Live television show on ABC15 in Phoenix, AZ.    We showed her before photos and she showed off her new brows and lashes for the camera.   While we were in the studio, off camera, I trimmed her new lashes for the first time.   Two weeks out from her procedure, she is recovering well and looking great!   Check back here for some photos and eventually, the video.  [video just added, below --Dr. B.]

AACS/ASHRS -- Laser Therapy Lecture

I'm here at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery meeting in Phoenix, AZ this week.   Today, as part of the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery lecture series, I was asked to give a talk on the current use of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in the field of hair restoration.   My lecture included a brief history of LLLT and significant events in the scientific research of photobiomodulation as well as an industry overview.   I also presented some case studies of my patients who benefited from laser therapy as well as some of the data from recent research going on in the industry.   It is rumored that the FDA has granted clearance for the HairMax LaserComb (Lexington International) a low level laser therapy device to treat hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), but as of this post and the lecture, this could not be confirmed.  Please check back for more info later on.

For hair restoration physicians, I have compiled a 'Laser Therapy Resource Guide' available for download.  This is the same document that was available after my panel discussion at the ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) conference in San Diego this past year.

AACS/ASHRS -- Eyelash Lecture

This afternoon at the American Society of Hair Restoration lecture series at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery meeting here in Phoenix--AZ, Dr. Paul Straub gave an excellent overview of the first ISHRS Regional Live Surgery Workshop on Eyelash Transplantation that was held back in October 2006 near Los Angeles.   Dr. Paul Straub hosted the workshop at his office in Torrance, CA.  During his lecture, Dr. Straub presented a review of the techniques that were lectured on and demonstrated at the Eyelash Workshop by the three faculty physicians: Dr. Marcelo Gandelman (Brazil), Dr. Jennifer Martinick (Australia) and myself, Dr. Alan Bauman (USA).   He gave an excellent overview of the techniques as well as showed some video of each of the procedures and reported that all of the patients from the workshop were doing very well after their eyelash transplant procedures.    There was significant interest and discussion amongst the physicians who were in attendance for this lecture.       For more information on eyelash transplants or the Eyelash Transplant Workshop, visit other posts on this blog (www.baumanblog.com) or visit www.eyelash-transplant.com

Low Level Laser achieves FDA clearance for hair growth

It was just announced that the FDA has granted a 510(k) market clearance to Lexington International, makers of the HairMax LaserComb, for the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern hair loss).    After years of clinical trials and delays, as well as much skepticism amongst the medical community, is it encouraging to finally see Lexington achieve this milestone.     Having used Low Level Laser Therapy in my practice since 1999, I've seen the results of laser therapy for hair loss patients first-hand for some time.   Many of my patients have benefited from in-office treatments, as well as from hand-held devices.  Through the years, there has been an extreme amount of skepticism amongst the medical community as to the benefits of light-therapy in the treatment of hair loss--as well as significant amount of ridicule (both public and private) directed towards physicians who supported its use years ago.

It is interesting to note that in my practice, I have actually seen better results in our female patients who have used laser therapy.    But one thing is for sure, no matter what non-invasive treatment you use, the earlier you start treatment the better.   Currently, in my practice, we encourage patients to use a multi-therapy approach, which includes the FDA-approved therapies (Propecia, Minoxidil, and laser therapy) as well as surgical therapies (hair transplantation) to help patients reach their goals.

At Bauman Medical, we offer treatments with the following Laser Therapy devices:

  1. Sunetics "E-type" in-office hood
  2. Erchonia "THL-1" (handheld)
  3. Lexington HairMax "LaserComb" (handheld)
  4. Sunetics LaserBrush (handheld)

For more information on hand-held low level lasers, visit the Hand-Held laser therapy page at the Bauman Medical website.

Rachel's (ex-TTM) Eyelash and Eyebrow Transplant

Today was Rachel's eyelash and eyebrow transplant procedure.   She was one of the patients we met in Los Angeles back in October.  She was interviewed and featured in ABC's Good Morning America's report on Eyelash Transplantation.    Rachel is a recovered trichotillomaniac (TTM), or hair-puller.   When she was a child, she suffered from an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), called trichotillomania (TTM), which caused her to repeatedly pull on her lashes and brows.   Over time, all of the hair on her brows and lashes were damaged and have not regrown for over ten years.    She made the trip to Boca Raton, FL to have her eyelashes and eyebrows restored.    Technically, her procedure went very smoothly.   She is starting her own blog about her experience.   Here is the link to her eyelash transplant and eyebrow transplant blog:

Eyelash Transplants on EXTRA

Extra_logo_250x771

Eyelash Surgery was featured on the television show EXTRA last night.  Aleve, the patient interviewed who had the procedure 'live,' was the patient we transplanted at the first Live Surgery Workshop on Eyelash Transplantation in Los Angeles in October.   Erica is a patient whose eyelashes we transplanted a few years ago.   She was 'ahead of the curve' when it came to the use of eyelash enhancement from transplantation.   You can view the video directly below.
