Italian Society of Hair Restoration Conference--MILAN

At the invitation of Dr. Vincenzo Gambino, president of the Italian Society of Hair Restoration (ISHR), we were honored to attend this year's Italian conference and present a lecture on the topic of Low Level Laser Therapy.    Several days prior to the conference in Milan, Dr. Gambino also hosted a press conference for the Italian and European news media regarding the use of Low Level Laser Therapy in the treatment of hair loss.   The press conference was attended by 30 journalists and members of the Italian and European news media.

The conference, entitled "Crowning Achievement in Hair Restoration" was attended by over 150 physicians and healthcare professionals from many countries.   Overall, the conference certainly did not disappoint!    Our Italian hosts were gracious and the lectures were exciting and educational.     Several lectures on Low Level Laser Therapy were presented, including Dr. Martin Unger (Canada), who presented the data from Lexington International's clinical trials, and Dr. Robert Leonard (USA), who spoke about his experience with the Sunetics in-office laser units he has been using. 


Eyelash Transplant & Alopecia Areata Question

Dear Dr Bauman,

I recently come across this new eyelash implant procedure that I am highly interested in.  For over 12 years now, I have noticed that my eyelashes (mostly from my left eye) top and bottom falls out. I wasnt too concerned as they would grow back normally. However, since last summer I have noticed that the roots look very thin and weak and there seems to be no sign of growth. There are now little gaps staring to appear. 

I have seen the dermatologist and they don't know exactly what it is-some say its not alopecia and some say it could be developing into alopecia.  I am very careful with my make up and only use them when there is a speical occasion but now I don't even feel like going anywhere and am starting to feel very anxious. My lashes were very thick and now they look so thin.

I read on your website that this procedure is not suitable for alopecia-but am not sure if thats what I have. Just out of curiosity why isn't it? Hair implants on the scalp are being carried out with patients with alopecia?

In alopecia areata of the lid or lashes, the skin actually 'fights' the follicles, causing the hairs to shut down and fall out.  This may be a temporary or permanent situation.  Because eyelash transplantation redistributes eyelashes into the eyelid, if the alopecia areata condition is active (or becomes active again) the transplanted follicles might be affected the same way.
There is always a chance that the alopecia might harm the transplanted follicles--even if you've had missing lashes for years.  Because you describe an 'active' loss of lashes, I would highly recommend NOT having an eyelash transplant procedure.   However, there are medications that can be used to help stimulate better growth from the non-affected lashes.   If you would like more information on the costs of these medication and how to obtiain them, let me know.    You can email me directly at doctorb@baumanmedical.com or call the office at +1 561-394-0024.

Low Level Lasers and ATP, a mechanism?

It has been suggested by dozens of peer reviewed articles and at least two texbooks that cellular changes in metabolism (specifically ATP production) can be caused by exposure to low level laser therapy. Here are a few of the articles that support this theory:

The current role of laser/light sources in the treatment of male and female pattern hair loss

The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy just published a new article on low level laser therapy in the treatment of hair loss.   This 'consensus' article was submitted for publication prior the the FDA clearance of the Lexington lasercomb.    It summarizes the currrent level of confidence in laser therapy as a modality for the treatment of male and female hair loss.    While there is good confidence amonst the authors, the article verabalizes a need for more studies in the field of laser therapy and hair growth as well as a 'caution' to those patients who might want to begin their own hair loss treatment regimen.  The 'take home message' was that if you are expereincing hair loss, you should seek the advice of a trusted and respected hair restoration physician.    Here's the complete article...
