Salon treatments with color or heat can sometimes damage hair

Hairdamage If you've got thin hair to begin with, harsh salon treatments that chemically color, straighten or perm hair can cause hair breakage.  Unfortunately, the woman in this ABC WPBF-25 news story on "Damaged Hair" found out the hard way the limit of what 'torture' her hair could take... http://www.wpbf.com/news/25830701/detail.html#COMMENTTOP

A medical evaluation with a hair loss expert can help determine if you are particularly prone to hair breakage.  The use of the new HairCheck trichometer can also measure your hair breakage and tell you if it is getting better or worse over time.

Medically-supervised non-invasive treatments, like low level laser therapy, nutritional modification or even topical medications can help your hair follicles produce thicker, healtheir hair that is more resistant to breakage or other damage.

For more info on the hair breakage diagnostic procedures (like HairCheck) or preventative and repairative treatments available at Bauman Medical Group, contact Dr. Alan Bauman at doctorb@baumanmedical.com or visit http://www.baumanmedical.com

How Good is HairScan(TM) at Measuring Hair Thickness?

"HairScan is like a CT scan for your hair." --Alan J. Bauman, M.D., A.B.H.R.S.

WHAT:  HairScan™ is a new, highly-sophisticated hair analysis test which measures tiny changes in the thickness of hair along a single hair shaft.  By looking at subtle changes in hair shaft diameter or cross-sectional shape over the entire length of a single strand of hair, the response (or non-response) to various "hair growth" treatments may be measured.

HOW:  Similar to how a CT or MRI compiles thousands of slices down the length of the human body, HairScan™ uses a laser to measure the diameter the hair shaft producing approximately 100 cross-sectional measurements for every inch of hair. Over the length of the hair, this gives a 'picture' of how well your hair follicle is producing the hairshaft.

"Is your Hair Growth Treatment Working?"

WHY:  Hair loss is most commonly characterized by a gradual reduction in hair quality (thickness, length and pigmentation) over time before hair production ceases from the hair follicle.  Because hair grows slowly, approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch month, it normally takes 6-12 months to appreciate a response to hair growth treatments through casual observation or standardized photos.  HairScan™, on the other hand, performed on a few strands of hair in an area of hair thinning should be able to detect improvements in hair quality within just weeks of starting therapy.

HairScan is available from Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton, FL

*HairScan is a measurement tool and is not used to diagnose hair-health or hair-disease and is not used to dictate treatment. Hair loss diagnosis and treatment should be managed by a Hair Restoration Physician who is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.
